Abstract

Photonic amplifiers have aided the high speed and long distance optical communication systems. In this paper author has reviewed three popular technical amplifier-Semiconductor Optical Amplifiers (SOAs), Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifiers (EDFAs) and Raman Amplifiers-and their performance analysis is done. The comparison is done on the basis of noise figure, gain, bandwidth, integration potential, and application compatibility. Further discussion on future trends for small and energy efficient solutions are highlighted related to recent developments in silicon photonics and hybrid integration. This work can assist in deciding the appropriate photonic amplifier topologies for a range of different applications in communication, sensing, and neuromorphic photonic systems.
