| Abstract |
Increased traffic congestion and road accidents are serious issues in the modern city environment. Normal traffic lights operate on a fixed-time basis and cannot adapt to changes in traffic flow or emergency situations. This project therefore proposes the use of a manual override in a traffic signal control system. It is interfaced using a Raspberry Pi microcontroller with programming in Python. The system is to be operated in two modes: automatic and manual. It also involves hardware like LEDs that indicate the traffic light signals and buttons for manual control. Software implementation is done using Python through the RPi.GPIO library. This project illustrates the application of embedded systems and microcontrollers in solving day-to-day challenges in managing traffic. This prototype is inexpensive, easy to scale, and an educational example that can, with modifications, integrate sensors, cameras, or IoT devices into a smart traffic light system. |
